Vehicle Safety Recalls Week and the Availability of Federal Recall Resources

3/11/2024

In last week's AAMVAcast, AAMVA's President and CEO, Ian Grossman discussed NHTSA Vehicle Safety Recalls week with NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman. While the past week was used to call national attention to the importance of maintaining safe vehicles during Vehicle Safety Recalls Week (March 4-10), AAMVA reminds members of important resources available in the state-federal partnership to remedy the danger of vehicles operating with open vehicle recalls. AAMVA's federal partner NHTSA, includes numerous resources that can assist consumers and safety partners in addressing the satisfaction of open recalls. This includes:
  • NHTSA's Recall Lookup Tool which allows for lookups of vehicle open recalls by VIN; year, make and model; and state license plate - https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls
  • Traffic Safety Marketing Communication Resources for States, Partner Organizations and Highway Safety Professionals - https://www.trafficsafetymarketing.gov/
  • NHTSA's SaferCar app which allows recall information to be sent direct to your phone: https://www.nhtsa.gov/campaign/safercar-app.
AAMVA also reminds members about the open grant opportunity through NHTSA that provides funding opportunities for State Processes for Informing Consumers of Recalls, including implementation of a state process for informing motor vehicle owners and lessees of open motor vehicle recalls at the time of motor vehicle registration. The closing date for applications is May 6, 2024.
