Policy Position on Combatting Distracted Driving

There are many distractions which may prevent a driver from focusing on the dynamic driving task, including using an electronic device, navigational interfaces, and many other possible cognitively impairing activities.

The highway safety community should collaborate to better identify and implement successful culture change strategies to prevent distracted driving. Producers and providers of electronic devices, mobile applications and in-vehicle interactive systems should be encouraged to undertake major educational campaigns to inform the public about proper usage.

AAMVA supports legislation banning hand-held use of electronic devices and encourages jurisdictions to review AAMVA Distracted Driving Model Legislation for possible enhancements to improve their existing distracted driving law.
