Policy Position on Reducing Vulnerable Road User Fatalities

AAMVA is concerned with the rise in traffic fatalities involving vulnerable road users (as defined by the jurisdiction). In continuance of AAMVAs vision of Safe Drivers, Safe Vehicles, Secure Identities, and Saving Lives, AAMVA encourages AAMVA members to prioritize their educational and enforcement efforts to reduce vulnerable road users involved in traffic fatalities. Specific emphasis should be placed on impairment and distraction while driving or walking. This effort should involve a collaboration with appropriate stakeholders such as the jurisdiction’s Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO) or equivalent provincial Highway Safety Office (HSO) in furtherance of jurisdiction goals. In addition, jurisdictions should consider introducing legislation that expands existing Move Over Laws to include any vulnerable road user present on or near the roadway.
