Historically, AAMVA has supported a system of VIN uniformity established by the Association in cooperation with the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission (VESC). The Association continues to support the use of standard Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) terminology by all users, the formatting of VIN specifications for use by jurisdictions, and determination by the proper jurisdictional authority that all agencies using the VIN receive the manufacturers’ VIN specifications required.
