Joint mDL Subcommittee Meets in Savannah

AAMVA’s Joint mDL Subcommittee met last week in Savannah, GA. The subcommittee had a productive meeting over three days discussing topics for mobile and physical credentials. The group processed several change requests for the DL/ID Card Design Standard (CDS), including ID number separators, address requirement, zone allowance for personalization data, formatting clarification for Canadian postal codes, country code display/orientation, allowance for diacritical marks and Indigenous names, card holder sex values, and portrait standards. Additionally, the group discussed topics and change requests for the mDL Implementation Guidelines, including new browser API protocol, mDL REAL ID compliance, credentials without expiration dates, enhanced credential values, corrective language for CDL non-domiciled field description, PKI requirements and the MSO validity period. The group also discussed goals and deliverables for this fiscal year which will include publication of the 2025 CDS, beginning work on modernization of the Design Principles and Guidelines for Secure DL/ID Cards (SCDP), processing CDS change requests for document security, continue processing changes for the mDL Implementation Guidelines, and a review/analysis of other mDL documents to assess the need for updates.
