AAMVA’s License Plate Reader Program Best Practices Guide, Edition 2 provides updated guidance for law enforcement and related authorities on the effective and responsible use of License Plate Reader (LPR) technology. The goal of this document is to:
- Improve accuracy and consistency in license plate reads to support public safety.
- Assist law enforcement in vehicle identification, recovery, and community assistance.
- Support tolling and parking enforcement in revenue collection and compliance.
- Encourage ethical and effective integration of emerging technologies.
Key updates in Edition 2 include a new subsection on LPR advantages and challenges, the consolidation of benefits and success stories into a single chapter, and two new chapters on LPR acquisition considerations and the ethical use of artificial intelligence. All chapters have been refreshed to reflect current best practices.
